Step-by-step guide to canceling ChatGPT Plus on web, iPhone, or Android. What happens to your access after you cancel, and how to avoid the next charge.
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, and signing up takes about 30 seconds. Canceling takes a few more steps, and the key variable is where you originally subscribed. If you signed up at openai.com or chat.openai.com on a browser, you cancel there. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, Apple or Google handles your billing, and OpenAI’s site can’t touch those charges.
This guide covers both paths so you cancel in the right place and don’t end up with another charge you weren’t expecting.
To cancel your ChatGPT subscription, log in at chat.openai.com, click your profile name in the lower-left corner, select My Plan, then click Manage my subscription. On the billing portal, choose Cancel plan and confirm. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, cancel through Apple Subscriptions or Google Play instead.
The web path covers anyone who subscribed directly at openai.com or chatgpt.com on a browser, whether that’s a laptop, tablet, or phone browser.
A confirmation email from OpenAI or Stripe should arrive within a few minutes. That email shows the date your Plus access ends and serves as your proof the cancel went through. If nothing arrives, log back in, return to My Plan, and verify the status shows a scheduled end date. A cancel click that didn’t save is easy to miss without that confirmation email.
One check before you start: open My Plan and look at your payment method. If it shows Apple or Google as the payment source, the web portal won’t cancel your subscription. Those platforms handle billing on their own, and OpenAI’s settings page has no control over what they charge. Skip to the next section.
If you’re on ChatGPT Team rather than Plus, note that only a workspace admin can cancel or modify the team plan. Individual members can’t cancel from their own accounts. You’ll need whoever set up the workspace to handle the cancellation at the workspace management level.
OpenAI’s iOS and Android apps let you subscribe to Plus directly inside the app. When you do that, Apple or Google becomes the billing layer. OpenAI’s portal has no record of these in-app subscriptions, so trying to cancel at openai.com won’t work.
On iPhone or iPad (Apple billing)
Open the Settings app. Tap your name at the very top to open your Apple ID settings. Tap Subscriptions. Find ChatGPT in the list, tap it, then tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If ChatGPT doesn’t appear in your Apple Subscriptions list, Apple isn’t billing you. Check Google Play or go back to the web method.
On Android (Google Play billing)
Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner. Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Find ChatGPT in the list, tap it, and select Cancel Subscription.
This billing-source rule applies across virtually all subscription apps. When you cancel your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, the same logic holds: cancel where you originally signed up, not just on Adobe’s own website. The platform that charged you is the platform you cancel through.
ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and reached 1 million users within 5 days. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Plus in February 2023 at $20 per month. The plan gives subscribers priority access, faster response speeds, and GPT-4 access, along with features like DALL-E image generation, Advanced Data Analysis, web browsing, and the GPT store for custom tools. OpenAI reported 300 million weekly active users across all tiers as of late 2024. Plus sits above the free tier and below ChatGPT Pro ($200 per month, launched December 2024) and ChatGPT Team ($25 per user per month billed annually, or $30 month-to-month). Team plans require at least 2 users and include collaborative workspaces and admin controls. Plus billing renews on the same calendar date each month. OpenAI doesn’t offer a subscription pause, so if you want to stop paying you cancel outright. Access continues through the end of the billing cycle you’ve already paid for, then the account drops to the free tier automatically.
Once you cancel, your Plus access stays active until your current billing period ends. On a monthly plan, that typically means anywhere from a day to a few weeks of remaining access, depending on where you are in the cycle when you cancel.
When the billing period expires, your account doesn’t close; it switches to the free tier automatically. The free tier now includes GPT-4o access with usage limits, which is a meaningfully better baseline than what free users had a couple of years ago when the free plan only offered GPT-3.5. Your full conversation history, any custom GPTs you’ve built or saved, and all your account settings carry over unchanged. If you resubscribe later, everything is still there.
OpenAI doesn’t issue partial refunds for unused days in your billing period.
A charge showing up after you thought you canceled almost always traces back to one cause: canceling in the wrong place.
If you subscribed through the iOS app and tried to cancel at openai.com, OpenAI’s billing portal doesn’t see your Apple subscription. From OpenAI’s side, there’s nothing to cancel, so Apple’s billing continues on its normal schedule. The same is true in reverse: if you hold a direct OpenAI subscription and look for it in your Apple Subscriptions list, it won’t be there because Apple isn’t billing you for it.
A timing issue is the other common scenario. A charge that processed on the same day you canceled was likely already queued before your cancellation went through. That’s a normal charge for the billing cycle already in motion. If a full new billing cycle starts after you received a cancellation confirmation email, that’s worth contacting OpenAI support about. Keep the confirmation email as evidence; the timestamp shows exactly when you completed the cancellation.
One edge case to know about: if you share a ChatGPT account and someone on the account restarted Plus after you canceled, you’ll see new charges even though you went through the cancellation process. Check with anyone else who has access to the account.
